Pure energy. These are the two words that best describe DJ Doug Brown, one of the most talented spinmasters to ever emerge from Brooklyn, New York. With a humble attitude, a formidable music collection and a knack for adaptation, Brown has mastered the ability to “move the crowd” better than many of his peers and he has the track record to prove it.
Douglas Brown was raised in Brooklyn by parents originally from the island of St Vincent. His father owned a sizable sound system in their home which consisted of 3 turntables, an 8-Track deck, 9 speakers, amplifier and equalizer. Brown fondly remembers the mornings that his dad would fire up the system.
“My father would blast tunes from the Mighty Sparrow, Calypso Rose and Beckett at 9 o’clock in the morning. Never fail!”
In the 1980s, Brown’s first foray into becoming a DJ began with making pause tapes on cassette by taping and editing songs from the radio. But his big breaks happened around age 15 when he spun records at basement parties for a local football team he played for known as the Brooklyn Renegades.
“This was around 1984 and 85. I was playing a lot of hip hop like Run DMC, Fat Boys and Disco Four. I learned how to read a crowd back then. And they really loved what I played.
Brown went on to gain a reputation and a following, especially among many of his co-workers at various city agencies of New York. In 1996, he joined forces with co-workers Anthony Williams and Rodney Belin for his first major solo gig at Brooklyn’s Prince Hall Masonic Temple. Since that successful night, he has never looked back. After participating in several open turntable events throughout Brooklyn and Manhattan, Brown has gone on to establishing himself as a top Club and Mobile DJ. He has made notable appearances at venues such as Crash Mansion, Deity, Sutra, Halcyon, Soda Bar and has held residencies at NY Perks, Prospect Pond and Bar Below to name a few. He has shared the decks with some of New York’s most formidable DJs including DJ Hard Hittin Harry, Domewrecka, DJ Fantom, DJ Obah, DJ One, DJ Ras, DJ Butta L, Barry Blends and the Rockaway Twinz. He has also worked closely with New York legends Ladies of SKYY (w/manager Austin Wilkinson) and radio host Barry Mason. As of now, Doug Brown is holding down a residency gig at Cozy Cafe Hookah Bar and Lounge every Saturday in the Lower East Side of New York City.
Currently, DJ Doug Brown has several internet shows in the works such as Soulful Vibe.com, DPSsoul.com and anothjer one that's is in the developing stage. Doug Brown has a very popular podcast show at http://dougbrownhighsociety.podomatic.com/.
“I love reaching a global audience. It is a real high to play for an audience outside of the five boroughs. My Michael Jackson tribute mix receives about 2000 downloads per month alone!”
For DJ Doug Brown, the most important thing for him in this business is to stay humble and not let ego take over.
“I love to share my music. I consider myself and entertainer and a professional. I love the energy that I give to my audience and I love what they give back to me. The main thing is to always remain humble.”
